The Effect of Subconjunctival Injection with Gentamycin and Dexamethasone Mixture in cataract Surgery

Abstract
We evaluated the clinical usefulness of intraoperative subconjunctival injection with antibiotics and steroid mixture in cataract surgery, which had been widely used by ophthalmologists.
A randomized, controlled, and prospective assessment of postoperative inflammation, perilimbal hyperemia, and ocular discomfort was carried out in patients with cataract who had been received cataract surgery(ECCE with PCIOL implantation).
Seventeen
eyes of total 40 were injected subconjunctivally with gentamycin and dexamethasone immediately following cataract surgery and the rest of the eyes, 23 eyes, were not.
It was found that the injection group had similar effect to the no injection group in respect to postoperative inflammation. Contrarily, in perilimbal hyperemia and ocular discomfort, the injection group was significantly greater than the no
injection
group(p<0.05).
From these observation, we propose that routine performing of the subconjunctival injection should be reconsider because it does not decrease the postoperative inflammation but contributes the ocular discomfort and irritation.
